Introduction

To God be the glory is a Hymn by the prodigious hymn text writer Fanny J. Crosby. It was set to music by William Howard Doane. 

To God be the glory was first published in 1870, in “Songs of Devotion” 

This text and “Blessed Assurance” are among the best-known and most-loved hymn texts of the thousands by Crosby. 

The song was initially ignored in the United States. It was, however, very popular in Great Britain. The hymn was sung in British churches after being included in Ira D. Sankey’s Sacred Songs and Solos in 1903.

In contrast to many gospel hymns (including most of Crosby’s texts), “To God Be the Glory” directs our attention away from a personal experience of God to his perfect glory

To God be the Glory celebrates the goodness and love of God in our lives. A love so intense and wonderful that it led Him to send his only son Jesus Christ to come and die for the forgiveness of our numerous transgressions.  

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 

Stanza 2 talks of the perfect redemptive power we enjoy through Jesus’ blood. This redemption is promised, “to every believer who truly believes”.

Even the vilest offender receives complete pardon the moment they believe. Christ is the propitiation for our sins and those of the whole world.

He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:2

Stanza 3 speaks of how great our rejoicing will be when God calls us unto Himself.

“To God Be the Glory” celebrates God’s greatness and love, and it calls us to appreciate the wondrous things He has done.

It is a glorious hymn to be sung, rejoicing fully in a spirit of gratitude.
